Signs and Symbols

Have you ever had a dream that you couldn’t remember; especially after several nights have passed? There are times when dreams are like incense in the air. Well, recently I have been having some dreams that continuously use the same theme and soon as I get up I want to go straight to my library and spend a moment with Jung (pronounced Yung) to ascertain what his thoughts were. The late Swiss psychiatrist Carl Gustav Jung devoted the last year of his life in 1961 to a book called Man and His Symbols; it is a fascinating book. From him and from others way before him most of humanity has believed that dreams have meaning.

As a child and even to this day my family has this weird custom when they dream about a particular thing they state that it stands for something more than the obvious and there is an immediate meaning. This is telepathically shared with many family members even the younger ones  what I mean is that sometimes two three or even four family members would have the same dream within a week of each other. We would find this out when we would later discuss it. There are symbols and signs in our family that are standardized.

Jung explains that there is a difference between signs and symbols. In our family there are symbols such as if someone dreams of fish someone is pregnant, snakes be careful of the enemy and the list goes on. There are also signs that are more universal such as if a mirror breaks it is bad luck. Another more personal sign is that if a rooster shows up on the front porch early in the morning crowing a stranger will appear.

No doubt families do share the uniqueness of their experience.
