As we approach the summer months and experience soaring temperatures. This would no doubt have an effect on the younger ones as their bodies get heated quickly. There is a need to keep them hydrated.

Here a few tips to prevent them from becoming dehydrated:

  1. Keep children out of direct sunlight. If they cannot resist the outdoors ensure that they play in a shaded area.
  2. If they must be in direct sunlight ensure they have adequate protection (sun screen/sun block)
  3. Give the children a lot to drink approximately every 20 minutes.
  4. Ensure they wear lightweight clothing (cotton).

Signs of Dehydration:

  1. Your child complains of headaches.
  2. The child’s activity level has drop compare to usual (talking, babbling).
  3. The child always wants water to drink; this is evidence that the child is mildly parched.
  4. The child urine is very yellow and rank/high.
  5. The child does not urinate often.

How to treat Dehydration

  1. Ensure that your child drinks water immediately.
  2. Get your child to a doctor if they are not drinking and alert.
  3. Get your child in a cool place out of the sun.

BONUS TIP:

Use Sun Protection Factor (SPF)10-15 darker skin tones and lighter skin shades atleast SPF30
