Charles Shubin, M.D. states that at the ages of 4 and 5 children’s social skills and independence blossom, which makes it the appropriate time to talk to them about safety.  For a child’s safety, you must establish specific rules:

  1. Choose your words and tone carefully (so they would not be scared  or misinterpret the conversation)
  1. Ensure your explanation is not a threat
  1. Keep on talking to children about their security


Possible Instructions

Instead of: Do not talk to Strangers

Say:                  Ensure you that you speak with your Mom and Dad before talking to another grown up.


Instead of: If you get lost in a store, asked an adult to help you find me

Say:                  If we are in a store and you can not find me, do not go outside, stay in the store and ask someone with a name tag to help you.


Instead of: Do not leave my sight

Say:                  Do not walk away from your mom and dad, so they cannot see you


Instead of: Do not keep Secrets

Say:                  Do not listen to anyone who asks you to keep a secret. Always tell your Mom and Dad what secrets you have.


Instead of: Do not talk candy from anyone

Say:                  Do not take anything from anyone except your parents or those your Mom and Dad say it is okay to.

Vacation Travel 101:

If you are planning to travel for the summer, here are some important tips:

  1. Travel with toys and games to keep children occupied and calm.
  2. Always pack an extra set of clothes in your carry on just in case your luggage is lost and flights are delayed.
  3. Ensure you have a list of hospitals and doctors that are covered under your insurance plan.
  4. Keep your pediatricians number with your travel documents.
  5. If you have children’s medicine ensure that you have information (name of medicine, dosages) on your person are all times.
